DAY 1: BOGOTA – LETICIA (AMAZON)

We will fly from Bogota to Leticia (the Amazon’s Department Capital). Upon arrival, we will go to the Hotel. In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to visit the City and see the Amazon river as well as the Brasilian City of Tabatinga.

DAY 2: LETICIA – JAVARI RIVER NATURAL RESERVE (AMAZON)

Today we will travel by boat on the Amazon river to then connect with the Javari river, where we will navigate for approximately three hours. The Javari river is the geographic boundary between Brazil and Peru. We will disembark at the Javari River Natural Reserve to then go to the unique and comfortable lodge (autochthonous architectural style). Here we will spend the night. This lodge, located in Brazil, even provides access to the Internet. In the afternoon, we will go out for a short walk to get familiar with the natural setting of this reserve.

DAY 3: JAVARI RIVER NATURAL RESERVE

On our third day, we are going to go by boat to the San Antonio Lagoons. In this site there will be an opportunity to observe avifauna typical of still waters and of forest edges. Most likely, and as we travel on the Amazon river, we may be seeing two species of the dolphin species that inhabit this river: pink dolphins (Inia geofrensis) and gray dolphins (Sotalia fluviatilis). We will take lunch in the heart of the rain forest before we continue our exploration of the fauna, especially birds, and the flora. We will return to our lodge at around 6 pm.

DAY 4: PALMARI COMMUNITY (JAVARI RIVER NATURAL RESERVE)

Today we will take a canoa trip on the Amazon river and will visit the Palmari community. A canoa is a small wooden boat that uses oars and allows for a quiet navigation, which is ideal for bird watching. We will also navigate on a “cachueira” (a small creek) to continue our exploration of the fauna and flora.
In the afternoon, we will go to the indigenous “chagras” from where we will be able to see several species of predatory birds, especially species belonging to the order Falconiforms.

DAY 5: SANTA RITA COMMUNITY (PERU) – JAVARI RIVER NATURAL RESERVE

Day fifth will begin with a visit to the Santa Rita community in Peru. There you will have time to wander around the area, learning about the culture and handcrafts of this community. In the afternoon, we will go for a two-hour walk on the platforms that hang about 40 meters (120 feet) above the ground. From this height, we will see the beauty and power of the thick rain forest and will observe many of the bird species that live on the upper trees’ canopies. We will camp tonight in this area to appreciate the birds at dusk and dawn.

DAY 6: JAVARI RIVER NATURAL RESERVE

In the morning we will return to the reserve. After breakfast, you will have all morning to enjoy the area or to review the literature available in the reserve’s library. In the afternoon, we will take our final walk on the trails around the reserve.

DAY 7: JAVARI NATURAL RESERVE - LETICIA - BOGOTA

Today we will go back to Leticia to then fly back to Bogota.
