Program Description

Trip Length: 13 days. Additional activities may increase the trip length.

DAY 1: BOGOTA – MEDELLÍN (ANTIOQUIA)

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, meet your fellow travelers at a festive welcome. This will be a great opportunity to finalize the details about the upcoming trip. Following, we will visit downtown Bogota to appreciate the colonial architecture in the romantic La Candelaria neighborhood.

DAY 2: BOGOTÁ – RIOHACHA (GUAJIRA)

Depart on a flight from Bogota to Riohacha, (Guajira’s Department Capital). Upon arrival, transfer to our hotel. Then, we will visit the Wayúu indigenous village known in Spanish as a Rancheria
After returning from the Rancheria, we will visit The Santuario de Flora y Fauna los Flamencos (Flamingos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary). This Sanctuary is located on the coastline of the municipality of Riohacha, between the village of Camarones and the Tapias River, covering 7,000 ha. The sanctuary has four lagoons (Manzanillo, Navío Quebrado, Tocoromanes and Laguna Grande) and numerous streams which serve as habitat to the Flamingos and numerous other endemic species. The sanctuary is a tropical woodland covered by jungles and mountainous forests.

DAY 3: RIOHACHA - RANCHO LUNA (GUAJIARA)

In the morning we will travel south-west from Riohacha to Rancho Luna passing by Camarones Beach.

DAY 4: RANCHO LUNA – EL DORADO NATURAL RESERVE (GUAJIRA)

After spending a spectacular night under the magic of Rancho Luna, we will go to El Dorado Natural Reserve. This 1,800-acre reserve is part of the Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Due to the variety of altitudinal zones, you will find in this reserve one of the highest concentration of continental range-restricted bird species found anywhere in the world. El Dorado reserve provides a critical habitat for several endangered amphibian and bird species like the Santa Marta parakeet (Pyrrhura viridicata).
In the afternoon we will embark in a unique bird watching experience.

DAY 5: EL DORADO NATURAL RESERVE (GUAJIRA)

Rise early to continue to explore the reserve and our unforgettable bird watching experience.

DAY 6: EL DORADO NATURAL RESERVE – CARTAGENA (BOLIVAR)

Venture out to explore the reserve for a last time this morning. In the late morning, we will head out to the city of Cartagena. We will pass by the cities of Santa Marta and Barranquilla, the capitals of the departments of Magdalena and Atlantico, respectively.
In the late afternoon we will arrive to Cartagena. After settling in the hotel, go out for a night walk to appreciate the lit architecture of this romantic city. Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984

DAY 7: CARTAGENA (BOLIVAR)

AM: Cartagena is recognized at global level as one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia. Today, you will be by your own wandering around this historical site. Plan to visit the walled city, the Plaza Bolivar, the Cathedral, the Gold Museum, and much more. Getting out and seeing the Old City on foot is perhaps the most satisfying reason for visiting Cartagena.

DAY 8: CARTAGENA – THE GULF OF MORROSQUILLO (SUCRE)

AM: In the morning we will depart to a private natural reserve two-hours from Cartagena: The Gulf of Morrosquillo. This area is a refuge for an important number of migratory birds.
Upon arrival and after a short rest, we will walk around the reserve for bird watching

DAY 9: GULF OF MORROSQUILLO (SUCRE)

Early in the morning, we will be bird watching. After breakfast, you could either join some planned activities or simply rest and enjoy the beauty of the Gulf.
In the afternoon, we will continue to explore the Gulf and its fauna and flora.

DAY 10: THE GULF OF MORROSQUILLO – RIO CLARO (ANTIOQUIA)

DAY 11: RÍO CLARO (ANTIOQUIA)

In the morning we will walk along the reserve trail, to observe the diversity of birds and vegetation. Some of the most prominent plant families in this area include: Lauraceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Malvaceae and Araceae , in addition to the interesting Balanophoraceae.
After lunch and a short rest, we will visit the Cueva de los Guácharos (oilbirds) National Park. This park was created in 1960 and it is the oldest of the 51 protected areas of Colombia. The park was named after the nocturnal Guácharo bird (Steatornis caripensis), which lives in caves in the park.

DAY 12: RIO CLARO (ANTIOQUIA)

Early in the morning and through mid-day, we will walk along the river’s canyon to admire its natural beauty. You will have the afternoon to rest or to enjoy the park.

DAY 13: RÍO CLARO - BOGOTA

You will have the option of returning to Bogota by air or by ground transportation to then connect to your flight home.
